Paintings by Ingrid Yuzly Mathurin

Opening Reception

Thursday, July 10, 6-8pm

Haitian American artist Ingrid Yuzly Mathurin will unveil her new exhibition, America Has a Problem, which explores Black existence, African American roots, and the complexities of identity in contemporary America. This exhibition addresses the erasure of Black history while celebrating the richness and resilience of Black culture. Through dynamic oil paintings, intricate textures, and innovative use of mosaic mirrors, Mathurin invites viewers to reflect on the importance of preserving Black culture and heritage in a world where these stories are often erased or distorted.

America Has a Problem marks Mathurin’s first use of mosaic mirrors in her work, a symbolic element that encourages self-reflection. The mirrors not only engage the viewer but also represent the need to reflect on one's identity and the responsibility to preserve Black history and culture, and one’s role in ongoing systems of oppression or change. By Prompting viewers to consider whether they are part of the solution, Mathurin adds a layer of urgency and introspection to the work. These pieces are further enhanced by a color palette that incorporates the African American flag, the American flag, and the Pan-African flag. These flags represent the intersection of African American identity, patriotism, and the global Pan African movement, with each color scheme serving as a visual representation of the historical and cultural struggles of Black communities.

The exhibition continues Mathurin’s ongoing exploration of race, heritage, and the fight for visibility, following her recent feature in at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. America Has a Problem takes a deeper look at the erasure of Black history, while celebrating the beauty and pride of African American roots. It challenges viewers to confront uncomfortable truths and engage in an urgent dialogue about the preservation and recognition of Black culture in the United States.

The opening reception will offer guests the opportunity to meet the artist, view the work up close, and engage in conversation about the exhibition’s themes. Music curated by DJ MIKEFLO will add to the immersive experience, enhancing the reflective atmosphere of the evening.

America Has a Problem is about reclaiming our story and celebrating the strength, beauty, and resilience of Black culture,” says Mathurin. “Through these paintings, the use of mirrors, and the powerful symbolism of the colors of the African American, American, and Pan African flags, I hope to inspire reflection on the importance of preserving our history and embracing our roots.”
